| Bill and Clare Braden have a relatively small 50-acre farm located in an area of South Texas called Adams Gardens, well known as the premium area for growing the sweetest citrus in the world. Our home is in the center of our orchards, with our packing shed and retail store named Granny Clare’s Citrus at the West end of our property. We ship and sell ONLY the fruit grown at our one location. By doing so, we watch our trees each day, not only during the harvest season, but all year round. This is the only way to have complete quality control over the citrus shipped. The taste and consistent quality of grapefruit is dependent upon several factors. The soil should be a rich sandy loam with an abundant supply of good water, and our location is a unique strip of land in deep south Texas, in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, blessed with both. We have one of the few orchards in Texas with our own water wells so that in times of drought our trees are never lacking the water which makes the fruit so juicy. The climate at our location, while quite warm, is cooled by the sea breezes from the nearby Gulf of Mexico, so our trees don’t suffer from the searing, scorching heat found in the growing regions to our west… more distant from the Gulf breezes. Red grapefruit from Texas is trademarked as Rio Star®, the newest, reddest variety developed at Texas A&M Citrus Center, just 16 miles from our location, and you will find that the world’s best grapefruit are the Rio Stars® grown in the orchards surrounding our home and packing shed. |
